How to Run a Single Elimination Tournament

Single elimination is the most widely used tournament format in the world: lose one match and you're out. It's fast, easy to follow, and works for any sport, game, or competition. Every round halves the field — 16 players become 8, then 4, then 2 — until one champion remains. The format is used at Wimbledon, the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds, the FGC, and every March Madness bracket.

With any player count that isn't a power of 2, some players receive a BYE — an automatic advancement to round 2. This bracket generator places BYEs automatically, following standard tournament seeding rules so the strongest players meet as late as possible. An 8-player bracket needs 7 matches. A 16-player bracket needs 15. A 32-player bracket needs 31.

Setting up takes under a minute: enter your players or teams, generate the bracket, and share the live link. No account needed, no software to install. The bracket updates in real time as you enter match results, so every participant and spectator always sees the current state of the competition.

Single elimination is ideal when time is limited and you want decisive results fast. The main trade-off is that a strong player can be eliminated by one bad match or an unlucky draw. If that bothers you, consider double elimination — but for most casual tournaments, single elimination hits the right balance of simplicity and excitement.

Once the final match is played, a champion card can be downloaded and shared on social media, Slack, Discord, or WhatsApp. The bracket link stays live permanently so anyone can review the full results long after the event is over.
